:: trips menu :: Through Spain, across the Straits of Gibraltar, right round Morocco, back through Spain. June 2009 Three thousand five hundred miles in sixteen days, me on a Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide and John on his Yamaha XJR 1300. All pictures © Richard Sharp 2009. |
John and sunflowers, riding through Spain, just south of Seville. The Rock of Gibraltar. Aspiring illegal immigrants trying to find ways around the Morocco/Spain border near Ceuta - the Spanish enclave in northern Morocco. Into the Moroccan countyside - much more hilly and green than we'd imagined. Getting a bit more hilly and barren. Village football match. Very poor pitch! The town of Ketama, hashish capital of Morocco. Pretty grotty and endless hustlers, all with the same opening line about having a friend who lives just near you! Hot and hilly, and wonderful mountain roads. In Morocco, the women do all the hard work... ...while the men deal with the really important decisions. Pulses and spices!
The village of Azrou, where I foolishly ate the complimentary peanuts at the bar and paid the price... Opium crop growing well! Traditional farmers with goats and sheep roaming. First sight of the High Atlas mountains. It's strange to be riding in heat getting on towards 40 degrees and seeing snow ahead. Gorge in the Atlas Mountains.
Big rocks in the Atlas. And no, they don't drive on the left - he's just avoiding running me over! South of the Atlas, on the fringe of the Sahara desert. Extraordinary rock colours and formations in the Gorges of Dades.
Women doing the laundry. Goats brain. Yum! Gorges of Dades. Further south into barren hills and desert. Wonderful Kasbah du Draa at Zagora. The end of the road. It's just sand for thousands of miles from here onwards. The long road back north. The Tizi n Tichka pass, heading back over the Atlas Mountains. And finally a cracker of a road near Carboneras in south east Spain. :: trips menu :: |
